2017 Shadow Canyon
Situated at 1,600’ elevation, a mere 8 miles from the ocean, Shadow Canyon is one of only a few vineyards in the York Mountain AVA. The warm days yield to cool nights allowing for a long growing season, ideal ripening and savory, smoky Grenache and Syrah.
VINIFICATION
Fermented with 25% whole clusters in open top bins. The wine spent 15-20 days on skins with pump-overs during cold soak and punch downs during fermentation. Aged 18 months in 265 and 228-liter French barriques, 45% new.
TASTING NOTES
Ocean breeze, raspberry compote, charcoal, woodsmoke, and creosote on the nose. Crushed limestone and barbecue smoke contribute to a savory palate with big, round tannins. The finish is juicy and structured.
