2016 Sel de la Terre Magnum
2016 SEL DE LA TERRE
Sel de la Terre, meaning "Salt of the Earth", was created indedication of Mac's grandfather. This Westside Paso 100% Grenache is a combination of fruit from our estate, Shadow Canyon, and Paper Street Vineyards. This is the masculine counterpart to L’Ange Rouge.
VINIFICATION: 30% whole cluster fermented in small, open top bins, and spent 15-20 days on skins with pump-overs during cold soak and punch downs during fermentation. Aged 18 months in neutral 500-liter puncheons and 350-liter cognacs.
TASTING NOTES: Inky ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented blackberry and boysenberry scents are complemented by incense, licorice and pungent floral accents. Seamless in texture and deeply concentrated, offering alluringly sweet dark berry, cherry liqueur and lavender pastille flavors sharpened by a jolt of peppery spices. Rich yet energetic in character, finishing with sharp delineation, resonating florality and fine-grained tannins that sneak in late. -Josh Raynolds, Vinous.

Slightly darker colored, the 2016 Grenache Sel de la Terre (100% Grenache brought up in used barrels) offers more dark fruits as well as complex notes of crushed rocks, spice, and white pepper. It’s elegant and silky on the palate but carries plenty of sexy Grenache fruit. While the L’Ange Rouge comes from Santa Barbara County, this cuvée is all Paso Robles and has a distinctly different style. It too will keep for 7-8 years.
This estate hit a home run with these latest 2016s, and the charming, more supple style of the vintage worked perfectly with the more savory, classic style preferred by McPrice Myers. These are unquestionably the finest wines I’ve tasted from him, and readers should snatch up these wines.

Deep brilliant red. Intensely perfumed, mineral-accented aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, dark chocolate and incense expand slowly with aeration. Palate-staining black raspberry and boysenberry flavors are complemented by an exotic floral pastille quality and a suggestion of star anise. Rich but fresh and energetic as well, showing outstanding finishing clarity, smooth tannins, and persistent florality.
